I helped to open the DC area Marimekko in large part because Maija Louekari’s work is so very inspired and inspiring and Samu-Josi’s pieces reflect the core of Marimekko’s founding philosophy: inspiration from art, history, culture, and surroundings translated into fashion or, as they put it, “lifestyle.” But I really just have one thing to say – it was an utter blast trying all of this on for size. The Omra didn’t work for me (OK understatement), but it did work for one of my friends at the American Film Institute. Thankfully, there’s something for everyone. I love watching Marimekko preserve what’s best in design yet manage to innovate at the same time. Marni
