Naming Your Baby Made Easy (Top 10)

by Katja Presnal on December 30, 2007

I know, I know. Finding a name for your baby can be emotional, difficult, even stressful.

Or plain easy breezy and you don’t even know what’s the fuzz about naming a baby being difficult.

When naming our kids, finding the name was extremely difficult, since we wanted the names to be pronounced somewhat same in both Finnish and English. I like Finnish hippie names like Tuuli (meaning wind) or Meri (meaning ocean), but they don’t sound as beautiful to me when pronounced in English. I always wanted to give my daughter a middle name Helmi, meaning pearl, since it has been in my family for so long, but it just didn’t work with the names we chose. We wanted to keep the traditions going on though, so all of our children have middle names, which have been long in the family.

Thankfully nowadays there are so many resources where to find baby names, that you will be able to find “it”. I have listed here some great links and resources to find baby names, listed the most popular names and even featured a few books to help you with the task. All the names having links lead to the meaning of the name.

BABY GOES HOLLYWOOD

Hollywood has always been a great source for parents naming their babies. Whether it’s parents honoring their idols like Cameron Diaz or Victoria Beckham to favoring the same names the celebrities name their babies.

Celebrity baby names have become more popular than ever!

Celebs have some great trends in baby naming. Madonna started a trend naming babies with a place name, she named her daughter Lourdes, a town in France. Of course, Paris was already in the list, thanks for Hiltons, and it is also Michael Jackson’s daughters name. But place-names have become more and more popular.

Austin, Brooklyn, Kingston, Madison and Montana, Alabama, Destin, Phoenix, Jordan and Indiana…

We didn’t go this popular route, I never temped naming my child Helsinki or Paimio, but we named our dog after the city where me and my husband met. We met in Frankfurt am Main, and we still haven’t seen other dogs named Frank.

Other creative way to name your baby is give a sweet name like Apple (Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter), Hazel (Julia Robert’s daughter), Peaches Honeyblossom ( daughter of Bob Geldof & Paula Yates), or Poppy Honey (daughter of Jamie Oliver). And when I hear “Ginger Spice” Geri Halliwell’s daughter’s name Bluebell, I can’t think of anything else but Blue Bell ice cream from Texas, even though the name was probably picked after the flower.

Many parents have a story to tell reasoning naming their kid Tiger, Liberty, Banjo or Fifi-Trixibelle. Of course, if you don’t really have a great story, but want something different… you can always name your kid Story, like Jenna Elfman and her husband did.

But even if you want to go on the wild side, you still might want to google the meaning of the name. For example at the first sight Melena might sound a great name for a little princess, it is “a beautiful or Fresh scent often found in a flower located in Eritrea” but Wikipedia tells a totally another story, and that ain’t pretty.

Doesn’t it suck when you like a name and then you know someone with that name who’s not your favorite type of person…? :)

Toi Melena juttu oli hi hii… :)
