Attachment Parenting International News

by Katja on March 31, 2008

I’m a firm believer of Attachment Parenting.

Attachment parenting
A parenting philosophy based on attachment theory, encouraging a strong emotional bond with parents during childhood is a precursor of secure, empathic relationships in adulthood.

I was a speaker for attachment parenting before I even knew what the word meant. To me it is the only parenting style or method that makes sense, and comes naturally to me.

I agreed with the Eight Principles of Attachment Parenting before I had ever even heard about them.

Eight Principles of Attachment Parenting
1. Preparation for Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting
2. Feed with Love and Respect
3. Respond with Sensitivity
4. Use Nurturing Touch
5. Engage in Nighttime Parenting
6. Provide Consistent Loving Care
7. Practice Positive Discipline
8. Strive for Balance in Personal and Family Life

For me attachement parenting has meant that I have prepared for the births of my children, and chosen to do it as naturally as I could, with my husband helping me to welcome the new family member. Breastfeeding was a natural choice for me, and all my children were nursed until they could spoon feed themselves.

Our babies were often breastfed in the middle of the night in our familybed, to maximize bonding and it made it a whole lotta easier too! I have been a stay at home mom since I tested positive on my first pregnancy test. And we don’t even use babysitters – we want to spend every minute with our children, and love the fact they include now us for everything. These are just a few ways we embrace attachment parenting in our home.

Attachment Parenting International (API) is a non-profit organization that promotes parenting practices that create strong, healthy emotional bonds between children and their parents. I hope you’ll stop by and check it out for yourself, API is a great resource for parents interested in attachment parenting.

Attachement Parenting International has several exciting changes they would like to announce, including:

  • A newly redesigned web site and new logo at Attachment Parenting.org;
  • Attachment parenting worldwide support forums;
  • Parent Education Program – a comprehensive series of classes for every stage and age of child development from infancy through adulthood;
  • A new book based on API’s Eight Principles of Attachment Parenting by API co-founders Lysa Parker and Barbara Nicholson which is expected to be available this summer;
  • A series of podcasts, webinars, chats, and forums with API Advisory Board members and other supporters of AP. Future events are scheduled with Dr. Bob Sears, Dr. James McKenna, and Kathleen Kendall Tacket. Check out the events page for more information.

These are just a few of many exciting things going on at API – click to see more!
