"What an interesting story. $179/week seems pretty low for a full time caretaker of children, doesn’t it?"

It's about $4/hour, yes. Babysitters make more than that. But as I understand it, an au pair is like an exchange student who also babysits--they're getting free room and board, treated like family rather than a servant, and full language/cultural immersion. (My high school French teacher recommended au pairing for that alone.)

I've been doing some Googling regarding au pairs so it was nice to come across this blog posting. I've heard some horror stories so it was really great to read something about it working out!

Hi,
I actually work at Cultural Care and am so happy to hear that you've had a wonderful experience with your au pair.
You certainly hit the nail on the head ~ Communication is key to a successful relationship.
Because it can be challenging to have a young international mesh into the famili, our local coordinators work with our families and au pairs throughout their year together, providing support, information and ideas. The coordinator's goal is to make the year the best it can be for the host parents, the au pair and, most importantly, the kids!

Hi!

I actually used AuPairCare for my agency and I know the model pictured above. She au pairs for a good friend of mine. I'd just like to say that I absolutely loved AuPairCare and that young lady is the most caring, efficient au pair ever. I did consider going through Cultural Care.... Unfortunately the screening process was a big nightmare so we decided to switch agencies. Best decision ever!

I love this article, you touch down on some great points. Not enough people even consider getting an au pair so I toot it whenever I can to mothers who need that extra help.

My sister was an au pair for years in New York while attending school. I have only heard the stories of what my sister went through. Almost like having her own family. Thanks for sharing.
