I have fond memories of one that hang in our hallway every year for 20+ years. It was a tree with pockets that had "ornaments" in them. You pinned on an ornament every day. Target makes inexpensive and cute chocolate advent calendars. You can also pick up the Playmobil or Lego ones after the holidays for a steal and stock them away for the following year.
