Swedes can now enjoy luxury hacks for IKEA

A new kind of home design company opened its doors this week in Sweden allowing people to revamp their existing IKEA furniture to look like a higher priced designer furniture. Introducing Superfront, a company who now offers “luxury hacks” for IKEA furniture frames. Their product line offers fronts, handles and legs for all of Ikea’s existing cabinet bases. Scandinavian designer furniture costs easily 5x or even 10 times the price of IKEA furniture, and now with Superfront people are able to get the custom look with Superfront’s several options for the price that may double the IKEA furniture price but still is way under the high street designer prices. All of the Superfront products are made in Sweden.

The concept is quite brilliant allowing you to revamp your old IKEA furniture or get a custom look for less. Superfront has 9 fronts, 8 handles, 8 legs and 12 different colors to choose from making it maybe difficult to choose from but easy to get a custom look. The prices are inexpensive, for example the blue “hack” above with sides, legs and handles is around 500 dollars, and for less than half of that you can upgrade a furniture with new legs and handles to get a custom look.

I love the idea of Sweden-made high quality products for cheaper but the concept of luxury IKEA hack is still a little shaky to me. I love the idea for IKEA kitchens or wall closet systems that otherwise might be very expensive to replace, however I have owned enough many PAX-closet systems to know that they might not be worth a makeover, and investing in a better quality might still be the most cost effective hack in the long run.

There is no denying though – the gorgeous look and relatively inexpensive price will make Superfront difficult to resist for IKEA and Scandinavian design fans.

Christmas Markets in Sweden

The best about Swedish Christmas markets: you don’t have to go far to find one. Most communities here in Sweden have their own Christmas market, and they are held in castles, schools, churches and even in barns in the countryside. In fact, my favorite ones are the ones held in the countryside inside the red barns and full of handmade goodies and ideas for crafts and DIY gifts. The Christmas markets start early in November, and we have been in a different Christmas market each weekend. Some are held only for a few days, and what we learned pretty fast, the same merchants travel around the country selling their products in various Christmas markets. So if you forgot to buy the specialty mustard for your Holiday ham, or want more of the fresh bread, the chances are you will find the same or something very similar again the next weekend from a different Christmas market.

Our first Christmas market this winter was Hantverksgården in Linköping, where all of these photos are from. We didn’t have snow yet, but as I am typing this we have a around a foot of fresh snow outside. Christmas time in Sweden is pretty magical, and it’s a great time of the year to come for a visit.

What is great design? Great design is beautiful, functional, and high quality. Typically with the high quality design comes a high price tag, and it makes it often difficult to find affordable Holiday gifts for design lovers. Don’t be alarmed just yet, like in good design – sometimes less is better. Here are 7 functional modern design gifts for any design lover for less, and all under 50 bucks. Many of the gifts are unisex, or suitable also for those hard-to-buy teens or college students, or make a great gift for a co-worker in the office.

Finnish design brand Marimekko know has an online store in the US as well, making it super easy for you to shop for this and other design gifts this year.

iPad Cover by Swedish 10-Gruppen is a necessity of modern times. The same bold prints can be found on iPad and laptop covers, and also on phone covers/pouches. Great gift for dad, grad, teen or stylish mom.

3. Sagaform Upside-Down Vase/Candlestick Holder ($39.95)
The Sagaform Upside-Down Vase/Candlestick Holder also from Sweden is a design object with two functions: it’s a candle holder that turns into a flower vase by turning it upside down. Get it for your girlfriend for Christmas and you’ll know she’ll always have a vase to put those flowers you’ll keep (or start!) buying her. Perfect also for office, small apartments or even college dorm, great inexpensive design gift for co-worker, college student or a special friend.

The Nuance Bottle Opener looks like a water drop, and is elegantly designed and a beautiful object on its own – but at its best opening a refreshing cold drink. Design from Denmark.

If you can’t get the design object.. get a picture of it, right? Posters and art prints are a great option for inexpensive gift items for design lovers, and I am particularly fond of the prints by Yumalum on Etsy, check out the vast collection, all under 30 bucks.

6. Design House Stockholm Bamboo Accessories ($19.95 and up)

The entire Design House Stockholm’s bamboo collection makes excellent gifts for anyone who likes great design and cooking or entertaining. The cutting boards serve both as cutting boards and serving trays.

7. Iittala Lempi glasses ($32 for two)
One of my favorite purchases this year has been the Lempi glasses designed by Matti Klenell for Iittala. They make a perfect gift for almost anyone. They stack and go well even in smaller kitchens, yet they are high quality, high design, and go from everyday table to dinner parties.

These products stand the test of time, they are timeless and modern at the same time, and something you can proudly leave for your kids too. The Barcelona chair is really the only product here that is outrageously expensive, and you can find the Barcelena chair, the Eames chair and the Le Klint pendant as reproduction copies for much less. Of course the quality isn’t the same then.

1. Eames Molded Plastic Dining Chair with Wood Dowel Base by Charles and Ray Eames ($399) was originally designed in metal, and entered as a prototype in MoMA’s 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design. The chair evolved with the times and today the Eames chairs are made of recyclable polypropylene. The chair is beautiful but you truly understand why it’s great design once you sit on it. This chair is my personal choice also as a desk chair for every day work.

A design classic that can be used in almost any room of your home, great gift item and timeless beautiful design.

4. Juicy Salif Citrus squeezer by Philippe Starck for Alessi ($100) is one of the most iconic products by Italian Alessi, and it was deisgned by Philppe Starck who originally drew it on a napkin on his vacation in Italy in the 1980′s. Like freshly squeezed orange juice on the mornings? Just put your glass under this one and squeeze your oranges directly into your glass. 7. Unikko print designed by Maija Isola for Marimekko in 1964 is one of the most copied prints of our times. One of my favorites is the coin purses, which are made from the left over fabric when other products are produced. Another true icon of sustainable design.

8. Lempi glasses by Matti Klenell for Iittala (starting $32 for set of two) is a new product for 2012, and bound to be a design classic used for years to come. It took years of designing to create a beautiful glass that is multifunctional in a way that it can be used in everyday use for milk and water, but also for wine in special occasions, and on the top of that you can stack for easy storage even in smaller kitchens. This is my use-everyday-for-everything glass.

9. Stelton Vacuum Jug by Erik Magnussen ($69.95) is a coffee thermos, yes, but it still stands out in its sleek form, and functional design as one of the modern design must haves. You don’t have to open the top to get coffee out, no dripping on your table cloth when you pour the coffee, just like a coffee thermos should work.

10. Tripp Trapp Highchair by Stokke ($214.17) is the only chair you will have to buy your kid. On the top – it’s one of the most inexpensive things you’ll ever buy your baby considering how many times it will be used. My 12-year old daughter still uses hers daily – now it has just moved from dining room to accompany her school desk. The Tripp Trapp highchair was designed to last from a baby to grandparent and grow as the baby grows, and it’s a family heirloom for sure.

Scandinavian Summer Home tips from Weranna’s

Set the Mood for Scandinavian Summer Party

This Scandinavian Summer Party feature was shot in Riikka’s summer house – in a boat shed! But you definitely don’t have to own a summer house nor a boat house – you can create the same look in your home or in your yard. I created something very similar in our backyard on our deck. But the entire look takes you to the mindset and feeling of a summer house — lazy days, easy cooking, never-ending sparkling wine supply and setting the table with what ever you have in hand and serving fish from the sea and fresh veggies and fruit from the garden.

THE SETTINGS INSPIRATION: THE SUMMER HOUSE

By the sea. Weathered wooden cottage, all grey from years of sunlight and sea water splashed to the walls.

A small deck or boathouse. A cozy corner built with old fishnet and old apple boxes, they are perfect to have around. Have a variety of nautical lanterns in all shapes and forms and ages around us to be lit when the evening starts to get cooler. We bring everything needed to our perfect spot in hand-made chip-baskets.

As we are at the summer house, the chairs never match. They are whatever can be found. The table is perhaps put together of old wooden planks found in the shed.

SET THE MOOD WITH TEXTILES & DECORATE

Linen cushions. Linen blankets for all. Linen table cloth. Linen napkins. White, linen, blue. A splash of aqua or turquoise perhaps. Or bright pink peonies in the middle of the table with lots of green found in the garden.

Crisp, pure, simple.

FOOD & DRINK

To drink? Ecological champagne or sparkling wine, like Sugarless Sparkling Wine. Perhaps throughout the meal. This year I would also go for a punch made of home-made fruit juice. With a touch of lime and fresh mint (from your own small herb garden, of course). Lots of frozen strawberries and melon scoops as ice cubes.

Popcorn. Keep it simple, and inexpensive.

Smoked fish. Sour dough bread. Strong local cheese. Grilled Asparagus with feta or parmesan cheese and bacon, and olive oil, salt and pepper. A huge salad with edible flowers on top. As a dressing I would have ecological raspberry vinaigrette or similar.

For dessert: Strawberries and whipped cream.

Playing cards. Enjoy the summer sun.

I know… I promised our new home in Sweden will not be completely decorated with items from IKEA, but I can’t help but wanting this one a few more things.

IKEA is launching its 7th IKEA PS collection with core IKEA values – quality design at an affordable price. IKEA PS collections are launched every three years, and this year, IKEA designers drew inspiration from 60 years of IKEA design history – looking through IKEA catalogues and archives – to reinvent products of the past and translate them into the future by updating form, function, and materials to make them more relevant and sustainable for today’s needs. The IKEA PS 2012 collection will be available in Nordic countries in May and at IKEA stores in the U.S. starting August 2012.

While glass door cabinets are somewhat outdated, I’m intrigued by this glass frame cabinet. It “frames” your items and makes a much cleaner look for your home than the trendy open shelving.

This candle stick adjusts your mood or decorating style – make it more traditional or modern, this inexpensive candelabra will be a modern classic.

The stool looks like a mixture of Danish and Finnish design – like if Alvar Aalto’s stool for Artek had a baby with Danish mid-century furniture. Lisa Norinder, designer of the new IKEA PS 2012 stool, took a chair her father designed for IKEA in the ’80s and updated its form to make it stackable. Yes, you can stack these chairs like stools – but they have a backrest making them the bit nicer extra chairs to have around. And the color options rock.

You have to see it to believe it. This lamp lays flat on the wall when not in use, thanks to LED light inside. Truly a light bulb moment when the designer Johanna Jelinek realized to create a lamp that doesn’t allow the use of an old light bulb. Genius.

Excuse our mess while we are moving in..

I’m literally still in process of moving in to our home in Linköping, Sweden, and at the same time SkimbacoLifestyle.com is going through some changes. All Skimbaco blogs (Home, Travel and Food) will be merged under Skimbaco Lifestyle, and one new blog will also be added under the same site: Skimbaco Lifestyle Finnish Edition, and I will also introduce some new writers (interested writing for Skimbaco? Contact me!).

But before the blog transformation happens… Here are a few photos from my actual home, which is also going through many changes – we’ve lived here about a week.

Remember that we had to sell almost everything when we moved from New York…? So we are starting from almost scratch and here are a few pictures where we are right now.. I want a few selected special designer items in our home – and I will combine them with inexpensive IKEA and flea market finds and hacks. It’ll be a slow process, but hoping you will join along to see how we decorate our Swedish home – and it of course started with a trip to IKEA.

IKEA Overload

When in Sweden, do like the Swedes do, right? Well, we have been IKEA fans way before we moved to Sweden, with our lifestyle (moving every 1-3 years to other state or country), it’s just the smartest way to go. Nothing has given us more headaches in the moves than expensive large solid wood designer furniture (and thus they will no longer enter to our home until we settle down, if we ever do).

Entry way

Welcome in. With three children we needed shoe storage right next to the door, and the IKEA Tjusik shoe rack ($59.99) fits the space perfectly.

The old antique market wooden box and the old lanterns from Kmart fit the space breaking the too modern IKEA look. The rug was left in the house when we moved in, and I might replace it when I get to it. The mirror jacket cabinet was already also in, and it’s perfect for kids’ jackets.

Office

The clear IKEA TOBIAS dining chairs ($79.99 each) were also in our New York apartment, and the BESTÅ BURS office desk ($269) seemed perfect for the open living room/dining room. It will turn easily from my desk to a buffet when we have parties.

The curtains were already in the house, and I hid about 9 screw holes from a TV stand with the Paris picture (it’s a framed page from an old Cavallini calendar). The snow globes, globes and glass Mickey Mouse statues are all souvenirs from places we’ve lived and visited. I was planning to sit by the window to work.. but so far I’ve preferred sitting on my gorgeous new (rented) Barcelona chairs instead. The real Barcelona chairs go for about $5,000, but get the copy chair Exposition Lounge Chair, Italian Leather for $539.99 and enjoy the same look.

Yes, I made a table for my coffee mug from a box and a tray, and I’m still working a lot from coffee shops, so I’m hauling this office around. Well, minus the Barcelona chairs.

Dining Room Nook

We got this side table from a rental company, and while it fits perfectly for this corner in the dining room, it probably won’t stay there long. When you travel around the world it’s funny how some weird things become important to you, and I displayed a few of those random items with memories in this side table immediately.

Sea shells we’ve collected from different travels. Picture of my husband and our first dog on a beach in Alabama a week after we got engaged. Boat pull from an antique market from Sackets Harbor, NY. The boat painting I bough from a street vendor in Spain. Sailor’s brass pen holder I got from my dad, filled with wooden sticks collected from a beach in Italy. Blue vase from an antique shop in Naantali, Finland and my beloved Villeroy & Boch bowl and Alvar Aalto glass bowls. Random collection of memories. This display won’t stay long, but after traveling for a few months it’s nice to see some old things.

Walk-in Closet

No… the house didn’t come with a huge walk-in closet and in fact we didn’t have enough storage space downstairs for our clothes, but we did have an extra bedroom that initially I was planning to make an office. But since I designed to work from the living room where I can see the gorgeous view, we turned the extra room into a walk-in-closet. We had done the same in our apartment in New York, and shipped some of our shelving units here, and now added a few pieces to it.

Good news that IKEA still sells the same system, but bad news was that the color was changed and so had the quality for worse (or might be a difference between Sweden and the US IKEAs too). Nevertheless, after much work my amazing husband set up a home-made walk-in-closet for us!

It’s still in process… maybe I’ll share more photos once it’s finished.

Basement

More from IKEA… the couch is divine for lounging and family movie nights. It will also sleep our entire family if needed. (lamp also from IKEA, but pillow isn’t)

Guess what else we have in the basement? A sauna!

I swear, our home will not be like from an IKEA catalog, but we needed some things ASAP to get settled in, and IKEA was the best way to get many things fast. Hoping to share more pictures soon.

I’ve been searching for a modern white dining table that can seat at least 10, and it hasn’t been as easy as I thought of. Maybe because Scandinavian homes are small, and most Swedish tables I’ve found are small. I’ve noticed that Swedish like their dining tables small even in the larger homes – and often the dining table seems to float in the middle of the large room. While I like the feeling of space – I like more big family dinners and gathering around the table with friends and hosting big parties and having family over. So more than anything – I want a large dining table!

I love the contrast the cold chrome legs and lacquered white table and plastic chairs create with the natural wood floors, old crown moldings and a few more feminine and natural accents.

White Dining Tables

But it all starts with a table.
I want a rectangular table, but I’m not set on what kind of legs it should have. Ideally steel legs, but I’m ok with wooden as well – either birch colored or white. Since we will be entertaining a lot, the size of the table is almost more important than the exact look – it should sit comfortably at least 10, so we will go for one of the expandable tables.

If you are obsessed with a certain chair style, you can of course start building your dining room with chairs. But my search began with the dining tables, especially after I realized how difficult it was to find a large white table that I liked.

Modern White Living Room Inspiration

When in Rome, do as the Romans do, right? So here starts my Swedish home decorating project, the Swedish style. While our home decorating style has always had Scandinavian influence, I am from Finland after all, we decided to create our new home in Sweden even with more Scandinavian style. I love very modern and minimalistic Swedish homes, but I don’t think I could maintain the pure white or even black and white minimalistic design, and I don’t know if I would really even feel at home in a house like that.

I love the modern sleek furniture but I would like to create a more homey feeling with combining the white modern furniture with colorful accents, souvenirs from our travels as decorations, children’s drawings as framed art, my photos printed..

Here are a few of my inspiration rooms. They of course don’t look like “us” because the personal belongings are collected over the years by the home owners, but you get the picture. I don’t want my home to look like from a home store catalog, where you can recognize every object – I want my home to have our personal signature.

In a very Swedish way, our living room and dining room are the same space. The house was built in late 50′s and has the look of the era with birch wood flooring, and since we are renting, we can’t white wash it like in the picture below. The wood flooring will give the modern furniture a little warmer look, and I like it. (More about the dining space in later posts).

When the furniture is all white, it will be very easy to change the look to dramatic or more serene, depending the season of the year. Both of the rooms below have simple white furniture and a sparkly ball lamp hanging from the ceiling, but with the wall art, pillows and other accents, the looks of these two rooms are completely different. And that’s what I’m craving for – a white canvas that I can change up.

The Perfect White Leather Sofa

In my dream room I’d have the white leather couch designed by Florence Knoll in 1954. This gorgeous white leather with chrome legs is a design classic.
The Philippe Starck’s Monseigneur Sofa is newer, from 2008, and most certainly would work as a second choice. Thanks to IKEA, the heaven of modern copycat products, the KARLSTAD sofa in white leather with aluminum legs will do the trick for under 1,000 bucks.
If you don’t like the buttons, the BoConcept sofa looks great too.

Armchair

The inspiration pieces here are the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair and the matching stool. To stay in the budget, you can find a knock off of the Barcelona set for much lower price.
IKEA has a matching KARLSTAD arm chair with the couch, but I don’t care for it as much – it’s little too heavy looking, I’d prefer something more elegant.. like Barcelona chair.

I like large coffee tables, and the Knoll couch and the Barcelona chair could perfectly be matched with the Zion coffee table from Living Furniture or even the large one is from Bagge Design.

I think a designer armchair is a must to complete the modern look we are going for, and luckily there are a few options in addition to the Barcelona chair.

Lighting

Since the winters are so dark in Sweden, the homes are filled with light coming from light fixtures. Swedish homes have lamps even on windows, so houses look pretty even when you drive by. I absolutely want to get more lamps than what we typically have had in our homes in the US. For the living room I’d like to have a large floor lamp, ideally the famous Arco lamp, but here are a few other options, even one from IKEA.
