Every June, my family loads up our SUV with suitcases, sand chairs and fishing poles and makes the four hour drive to the North Carolina coast. It’s my favorite week of the whole summer. I love feeling surrounded by family in our little beach cottage, but nothing compares to the magic I feel walking along the beach, picking up seashells and listening to the waves crash along the shore.

And almost as wonderful as our actual beach trip is the preparation for it. My gym membership card is swiped more than usual in hopes of achieving the elusive “beach body,” and I spend at least two weeks packing beforehand, making sure I have every outfit planned down to my shoes and earrings. Thank goodness spring break is around the corner. My family is going to take a few days to explore the mountains of North Carolina. We’ll be stopping in Asheville for one night, then spending a few days in the mountain town of Highlands, where waterfalls are as abundant as the curvy roads. In addition to my children’s luvies, snacks, and spring coats for that cool mountain air, I’ll be taking our new Intel tablet on this trip. We didn’t have a tablet before owning the Lenovo ThinkPad 2, and after taking some time to get used to the new Windows 8 operating system, I cannot imagine not taking it on our spring break excursion.

7 Reasons Why I’m Traveling with My Intel Tablet

1. Travel Planning

I’ve done a lot of trip planning while watching TV on my tablet. I’ve mapped out the best routes. I’ve bookmarked things to see on my travels, too. I want to continue my research while on location. The tablet makes it easy for me to do so. I love my smartphone, but the larger size of the tablet makes it a lot easier to reserach destinations on the go or in the comfort of the couch.

2. Entertaining the Kids in our Room

My kids have basically taken the tablet away from me. They love it. With the built-in inking feature, the kids have so much fun drawing with the tablet. They write notes. They draw glasses on their dad. It’s provided hours of entertainment. We love the app Skitch. My daughter has also found some great preschool games, too. I firmly believe in seeing things when traveling, and I don’t allow electronics during our dinners, but the tablet will be great for some downtime in the hotel room.

3. Watching Movies or TV Programs

The picture on the Intel tablet is crisp. It’s been great for watching TV and Netflix. With free Wi-Fi, I don’t have to be limited to what is on cable while in a hotel room or rental house. My son has earphones, so if he doesn’t want to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse then he can watch something else while we get ready for our day’s adventure.

4. Easy Access to Email and Social Media

With the tablet, and the touch of the Windows email app, I have all my accounts right there at the touch of the screen. It truly makes it easier to stay in touch and on top of my email when traveling. My mobile phone is just too small for me to type well. Under the People app, I can view my social media updates and notifications. I can take a photo of us in our room at Old Edwards Inn and Spa with the tablet and share it with my friends immediately.

5. Easy Access to Restaurant Reviews while On-Location

The one thing that the Intel tablet truly masters is speed and easy transition from one thing to another. It’s so easy to go from one app to another, watch a movie, or surf the net. It’s going to be great to have while traveling to seek out restaurant reviews, search for things to do in a new area, or even to see what’s playing at the movies while I’m in town. If I feel like having a burger for dinner, I can find the best burger in town within seconds.

6. Recording Special Travel Moments

I truly need to do a better job of catching special moments on our travels. The built-in camera allows you to transition from video photography to still photography with ease. The camera quality is good. The dual-camera feature enables you to get the videographer in the shoot, too.

7. Catching Up with my Favorite Reads

The tablet is great for reading. I’ve not downloaded a book yet, but I love reading my favorite blogs on it. I despise reading blogs on my phone. In fact, I don’t do it. Now when I travel, I can keep up with what Katja is posting on Skimbaco while I’m away.

I’m looking forward to taking the Intel tablet on this trip. I’m sure I’ll discover even more great uses while on the go.

Packing for a trip, whether across town or across seas, can always be stressful. I tend to be a last minute packer, which may not always be good, but I have gotten good at knowing what I need to grab. Having go-to travel items makes the packing process a lot easier. I am packing for an upcoming trip to Europe, and find myself reaching for those certain items I can never travel without. Here are some of my must have travel products.

My one of a kind style

Sonoma Chic is how I describe my unique style. I mix secondhand garments with high-end pieces to achieve a look suitable for my wine country lifestyle.

Sonoma Chic is also laid back, classic, versatile, modern and fun. Which happens to describe my personality, too!

How I choose to dress myself is one way I let my individuality shine through. While I don’t embrace every current trend I see, I do enjoy adding a select few to my wardrobe every now and then that suit my style.

One trend I am incorporating into my wardrobe wholeheartedly  is tomboy style. From boyfriend jeans with sneakers or combat boots with a leather biker jacket, the tomboy look is not as masculine as you might think.  To the contrary, often I feel even more feminine in tomboy fashion. And tomboy looks are always very comfortable and versatile.

A fashion trend that has become a regular favorite of mine is the colorful jean look. While I do wear traditional blue jeans frequently, and always will, I also like to wear colorful jeans. From red hot to bright blue, colorful jeans add a big pop of vibrancy to my wardrobe. And they’re so versatile and easy to style. Just add another brightly colored or neutral top and a great pair of shoes for a chic and current look without a lot of effort.

To make an otherwise droll outfit look more interesting, I like to wear a silk scarf in an unusual way. Whether I make it into a necklace, tie it around my neck cowboy style or use it as a belt on my coat, it’s a simple way to accessorize my look and let my one of a kind style shine through.

Floral prints, horizontal stripes, and leopard spots are all patterns that I never hesitate to wear. They allow me to express myself in a fun and current way. Pattern mixing – wearing stripes with leopard print, for example – is a daring way to show my personality when I really want to get noticed.

Fashion blogs and magazines, Pinterest, and online shopping influence my one of a kind style the most. Seeing what’s the latest in my favorite shops, thumbing through a fashion magazine, visiting style blogs and pinning outfits on Pinterest help me create looks that let me express my personality in the best way possible.

Let travels inspire you

One of the best things about the travels really is what we can bring home. And by this I don’t just mean souvenirs we buy, but how travels really effect and change us and how we arrive back home somehow changed. I think that’s what traveling is really about. Traveling is about inspiration, and absorbing something new. Sometimes it just means learning something new about yourself, sometimes it’s also a new skill, like how Satu learned to make pasta in Italy.

On our last trip to Italy we spent some time in Tuscany, in Lucca, and we got quite obsessed not just by the local pasta dishes but by olives, handmade soaps and other local products.

One of the best things during of our visit in Tuscany was the days when we just got to our rental car and started driving in the mountain area North of Lucca to see what we could find. One day we saw a sign for Valdottavo Olive Festival that by luck was happening that same day. Valdottavo is a small village about ten miles / 15 km North-West of Lucca and it’s surrounded by olive groves. The Valdottavo Olive Festival takes place every March, celebrating the new harvest of olives and olive oil with music and food, in true Tuscan fashion, and we just happened to be at the right place at the right time, and I took it as a sign from the olive gods.

Now when we shop for olive oil back home in our local grocery store, we try to look that we only buy olive oil made in Lucca, remembering our trip to Italy and in a small way showing our respect for the region by supporting them even when we are back home. It has become somewhat a tradition, my husband reading the label, me looking at him and waiting for the verdict, and then the smile “yes, it’s from Lucca” and we feel like we have a secret right there in the middle of the food market as we both go back to our memories of our trip to Tuscany. It’s not really just about olive oil. It’s about remembering the time we felt carefree and somewhat adventurous and just wanted to take our family for an adventure in Tuscany.

One day in Lucca, we found the perfect craft market. Local artisans were selling paintings, pottery and ceramics, handmade soaps, silver jewelry and much more. I wanted to bring Tuscany home and fill our suitcases with pottery and especially with the gorgeous cutting boards made out of the olive wood. I bought a small creamer and a sugar bowl and two cutting/serving boards and I love them on my kitchen counter now and they are daily reminders of our trip.

It may sound silly, but souvenirs do play an important role. Sometimes we go on these “once-in-a-lifetime” trips, and come back home and almost feel like nothing has changed, did I even go, was it just a dream… Do you know what I mean? Or is it just me who looks back in my life and am in amazement, wow, did that really happen to me? But when I see the things I brought home for my everyday use, I do often smile and remember fondly the places I have visited, and it does make my everyday life somewhat better, and it also gives me willpower to make other “dreams” come true too. If I was able to make that amazing trip to Tuscany happen, I can make this and that happen too.

We have talked a lot about different kind of adventures and being adventurous here at Skimbaco Lifestyle, and while I know – craft shopping in Tuscany is not really your most adventurous thing to do, yet somehow that trip was very empowering for us as a family. Remember that it is all about defining what adventurous means to you!

One of the things we also loved shopping in Lucca was all of the handmade soaps. We carried home pounds of handmade soaps made of olive oil and fresh Tuscan herbs! I mean – how could we not bring that goodness home? We have been savoring these soaps and now almost 11 months later our soaps are almost gone. Adrienne goes to Paris to shop for her mustard, and I long for Tuscany to buy more soap.

My husband’s solution was easy… he did book us a new trip to Italy, and I couldn’t be more excited about it (come to Rome with me and Instagram travel with me), we are leaving in less than two weeks. However, like I said, there is something about traveling that empowers you, and my 11-year-old daughter and I had a different solution to the missing handmade soaps: we wanted to try making our own soaps! Greetings from Aspen

As a travel lover, when I was presented with the opportunity to travel to winter hotspot, Aspen, I knew I had to take full advantage of this opportunity. I have always traveled to warmer destinations in the past, but am very excited to jet off to a winter destination. I must admit, I have never skied before in my life, let alone clip my foot into a ski! However, at Skimbaco we are all about embracing new experiences and trying new things. I cannot wait to have my first ski lesson in Aspen! I will be staying at The Little Nell, which Travel Insight writer Leigh mentioned as one of her top picks for a luxury holiday adventure.

Packing for winter adventure in Aspen

What does one pack for a winter adventure in Aspen? This is my first experience, so I hope my bags are filled with everything I will need to have fun and look good on the slopes. I approached the always dreaded task of packing by breaking it into categories: ski clothes, apres ski, and boots.

Ski Clothes:

Having never skied previously, my closet was not prepared for the slopes. I headed to a ski outfitter and picked up some new clothes. After doing some research, I knew to avoid cotton anything and opted for all moisture wicking fabrics. I picked flashy spyder pants, Under Armour base layers for extreme cold, and non-cotton socks.

 Apres Ski:

 Sweaters, sweaters, and more sweaters. From shawl collar to crew neck and wool to waffle knit, I packed them all. I opted for sweaters with winter intarsia and design that I thought would be fitting for the ski lodge. Sweaters shown are from Ralph Lauren and Jack Wills.

 Boots:

 This may be the first trip where my suitcase is not filled with driving loafers and boat shoes, but seeing as the streets will be covered in snow I am packing accordingly. A tall pair of Ralph Lauren winter boots will be perfect for heading to the slopes while the classic LL Bean Boot with fleece lining will be great for getting around town while still incorporating a bit of my preppy style.

Last but not least, the jacket. Perhaps what I have found to love most regarding winter fashion. I will be packing my Moncler jacket to stay warm, but very on trend at the same time.

While at first you might wonder why Oakley Airwave Ski Goggles come with a 600 dollar price tag, but once you get to know these luxury snow goggles a little bit better, you get it. They don’t just give her a perfect visibility on the slopes with crystal clear vision but she will be able to have preloaded maps available for many resorts, abd can find her location and even track others in your group. Shearling gloves are a classic winter accessory that never goes out of style, and I have owned several pairs of them. They tend to be pricey, and if you love snow as much as I do… they do take some damage when they get wet. I’ve found that Timberland and Ralph Lauren gloves give the best bang for your buck, good quality, but not super expensive. Shearling Cuff Glove by Ralph Lauren would make a perfect gift for any woman who likes classic style.

6. Peppermint bark from Williams-Sonoma ($26.95)
Hot chocolate gift would be a perfect too for a snowbunny gift, but my personal favorite is peppermint bark, it just says winter to me. It’s easy to make at home but my favorite store-bought peppermint bark comes from Williams-Sonoma.

7. Uniqlo Heattech Leggings ($14.90)
If practical is what you are looking for for the skier girl in your life, there is nothing better than Uniqlo heattech leggings. I swear by these, and own these in several colors. They are ultra light (but warm) and pack perfectly in small for ski trips and go from under layer for snow fun to warming leggings under skirts for après-ski fun. That’s why she needs them in every color for each occasion.
