This post is part of BlogHop Blog Conference At Home educational series to learn about blogging.

Blogging as a Lifestyle Choice – or a business?

Achieve a Lifestyle you want – or Maintain the Lifestyle you want

I was sitting by the pool in a luxury resort in Florida with a few fellow bloggers watching our husbands swim in the pool with our kids, and one of the bloggers said “can you imagine blogging has made trips like this possible for our families” and explained how she was not used to traveling and that her family probably would not travel much if there wasn’t for trips they are doing because of her blogging. My reaction was quite different – I would be living life to the fullest, even if I wasn’t blogging! I knew we would travel (all of my three children were born in different countries, way before I started blogging!), and I knew I would be probably driving the same car and wearing the same clothes too even if I wasn’t blogging.

Passion – or business – or both?

Many bloggers start blogging as a lifestyle choice without a business plan or any plan whatsoever, and then become popular bloggers and realize that blogging isn’t fun anymore; it has become a job, business or chore, and instead of living the life the want to live, their days are suddenly filled by business meetings, flying around the country meeting with brands, creating sponsored content, selling advertising and hiring writers/designers/talent agents. Now – that’s awesome if that IS your goal. But you just need to keep in mind that the more you want out of blogging (money, opportunities, advertisers, free products, trips..), the more you also have to put into it. If you want a business out of it; you need to treat it as a business. But if you want to blog to achieve/maintain a certain lifestyle, there is nothing wrong about that, and you can become successful blogger doing what you love!

Blogging as a lifestyle choice allows you to gain access to experiences and things you otherwise might not to, or it can make the lifestyle you want to live possible, or allow you to be more flexible in where you live – there are several ways blogging can help you to live the life you want to live. Here are some tips how to make it happen. But remember; this is not a post how to become rich by blogging, but this is a post how to live the lifestyle you want to live, and enjoy blogging as part of it. This is a post how to make blogging a lifestyle choice.

Imagine it!

What kind of life you want to live

Fill the blank in this sentence:
“I would do ….. everyday if I could make money doing it”.

Think what are the things you want to do in life, how you want your everyday life to look like, what do you see yourself doing. How would you ideally earn your living? What kind of things you love doing? What would you change in your everyday life if you could? What’s your favorite hobby?

I know a food writer, who doesn’t make much money, but he eats in the best gourmet restaurants of New York City several evenings a week, for free. He writes restaurant reviews for local websites. I know travel bloggers who travel around the world for no cost and they syndicate their articles about travel destinations to several websites and magazines. And what about Adam, whose dream was to eat pastries and chocolate in Paris? He started a blog about different pastry shops in Paris, and funds his living in Paris by blogging about pastry shops and chocolatiers in Paris. Remember Julie who cooked recipes from Julia Child’s book every day for a year? They made a movie of her.

You can do it too.

Make a Plan!

How can you achieve it?

Do you have a hobby that you know a lot about? What kind of skills you have? How could you combine your skills, and your passion and what would your ideal blog look like? What do you have to offer for other people by sharing your lifestyle or what you love doing?

Many bloggers love to write and for them it’s just important to have their voice heard to get a satisfaction from blogging. Obviously, many also make money by writing. But don’t be intimidated even if you think you are not a good writer. There are a lot of bad writers who are successful bloggers. English isn’t even my native language and my grammar isn’t that great as you have probably already noticed in this post, and I have done alright with blogging.

If you like photography, focus on learning how to take even better pictures and make the pictures the focus of your blog, not words. If you have great personality on camera, start creating videos and start vlogging (video blogging) instead of blogging. Think of ways you can deliver your passion, things you do, things you love in an unique way. In a way that you see yourself doing again, and again, and you love doing it.

If you are already living the lifestyle you want, and just want to maintain it, share it, or make money by blogging about it, you are all set to start creating! But if you are not there yet, no worries. Then you need to dress for the life you want, not for the life you have. If you want to become a travel writer and get your trips funded by writing/blogging – you need to start writing about traveling before you get any assignments, or invitations to press trips. In fact, you need to write a lot before anything comes to your way. You might even have to invest money into getting great content for your site. You might have to pay for several trips and create great content about them so you have something show what you can do. I bet nobody sent Julie Julia Child’s book to review, she bought it herself, or nobody sponsored Adam’s first trip to Paris, he saved money for the plane ticket himself.

Nobody paid my first blogging conference ticket or airfare, I paid them myself as an investment to my blogging and to myself. Even today when I get a lot of invitations, press releases and product review requests, I STILL mainly write about things I love and what I want, not the things others want me to write about. Luckily many companies have noticed who I am, and what I love and we have been able to work together in a way that it has allowed me to live the lifestyle I want through blogging. (My biggest thanks go to Park City Mountain Resort, Disney and Hanes).

Live it!

Everyday choices you have to make

I’m not going to lie and say it’s easy. It’s not, and you still need to treat it as a jobby, hobby that is sort of like a job, or habit, or business if you want the benefits in the long run. But since you are blogging about things you love, this should be fairly easy for you, right? You just have to be consistent if you want to build a community of readers who read your blog. You can’t just turn your back on them for a month and then expect them to be part of your everyday life again when you feel like it. You have to respect the people who read your blog.

And once you start getting readers, you will notice you will start getting emails from companies wanting you to write about their products, or asking to advertise on your site. It feels so good when people notice what you are doing but at the same time always remember why you started your blog to begin with and stay true to living the lifestyle you want. I hear way too often from bloggers that they have several posts they “have to write” and they don’t have time anymore to write what they “want to write”. I think it is possible to make a blogging a business AND a lifestyle choice, but always remember to stay true to yourself and your goals.

Door.

It’s closed, or it’s open.
Intimidating, exciting, and often full of possibilities.
Sometimes it can be slammed in the front of you or behind you.
It’s opened with an excitement. Or fear. Or joy.

I have always loved doors, and loved the saying “when one door closes, another one opens”, and I love to think that there is something new and exciting behind every door, and I can’t wait to open them all. It’s like opening real life advent calendar. I just opened a “new door” in my life by making Skimbaco professionally my main focus.

I also love taking photos of doors at my travels, and I decided to host a “Door February” at Skimbaco Travel, and the Travel Photo of the Day is a different door for each day of the month. Some are open, some are closed. Some are fancy, one is a horse stable door. I told about it to a few friends – and they loved the idea. Doors do symbolize so many things in life, don’t they?

Please join us in “door February” – time to reflect opening (or closing) some doors in your life, sharing what it means to you. If you have a home design blog – your post can be about doors in interior design. If you have a fashion blog – open a door to your closet for us. Every Monday in February, I will be collecting your “door” posts for all of us to enjoy.

You can choose to see anything in life in black or white, in all the shades of grey or in the full scope of colors, and the same applies to social media.

We all have probably read by now about studies concluding that social media is distracting us from reality and it’s bad for us. At the same time the people who are actively involved with social media testify it has changed their lives for the better. Social media has saved lives, brought lives together, but at the same time – there is a lot of negativity and even bullying and depression among the social media users.

How social media reflects in your life depends on you.

I’ve had great discussions about social media with a few friends this week, and one of my friends asked me what I thought was the best and the worst part of social media for me personally, and if I could help her to figure it out. I don’t think anyone can figure social media out for someone else. I think everyone has to decide themselves what they want to share, and what not. And what they want to receive, and what not.

I tend not to share many negative things about my life. Some people misunderstand it that I am trying to be fake, build an image of myself of as someone than I’m not. While in very very small way it is true – I also often speak about building your personal brand online and my “brand” and “imago” is about being positive and living life to the fullest – it still doesn’t mean that I am a fake person.

One of the reasons that I might not tell everything about my life online is that my life involves other people that I care about, and I will not share information that involves them. It’s not that I wouldn’t want to share some of those things with you, but it’s that the other people in my life wouldn’t want me to share them. It doesn’t make me fake, it just makes me a person who cares about other people’s feelings.

I have shared several bad things about my life, and will, but I don’t think you need to know every time I have a bad experience – like last week when I got horribly rude customer service in a coffee shop. I don’t need your sympathy for dealing with a rude barista, and I in fact think that many of you might think that I am very shallow for sharing my coffee shop encounter. However – when I got sick a few years ago I needed your support, and you were there for me. You knew that if I say life sucks, it really sucks, and you gave me strength to move on.

Every word counts. To someone.

Social media is a two way road, and I really believe that the more negativity you put out there, the more negativity you will also receive. I want to share positive things, and I also want positive things find me. That’s one of the best parts of social media for me – celebrating life with someone, every day. We need each others, and especially when we are down we need to know that someone else has gone through the same thing and survived, and the beauty of social media is that it brings us a lot of hope for those moments that we might be down. If we choose it to. I think some people feel that if they have a bad day, so should everyone else.

On the other hand I think the worst part of social media is the bad things it brings you. And I am not even talking about bullying or anyone being mean to you. I mean that social media amplifies life and it makes your network large, and life happens. In somebody’s family someone dies, someone’s kid gets sick, or house flooded. As a person who cares so much about other people it is sometimes very hard to see so many people in my social media community to get hurt. Sometimes I feel helpless because I feel that I can’t help enough when someone in my community is in need. But the best thing about social media – often only one tweet, one “like” button, or one blog post or comment can truly make someone’s day.

Make social media count, and use it to change someone’s day for the better. Start today.

The events during August were sort of surreal, and in a way I don’t even want to write it all. I want to be humble, yet I want to celebrate all of my work-related successes. I want to be down to earth, yet I want to acknowledge what has happened. I have never before reached for the stars, but some of the events that happened the past month made me think, what the heck, why not?

I am ready to take this blogging business seriously, while still keeping my job as a Community Director at Collective Bias. I think the past month I proved myself that I can do it all, with the help of an amazing community I am lucky to have. And by “doing it all” I mean: to inspire and help even more people to reach their personal and professional goals both via my job and via my own company.

Here are two days of my professional blogger life in August 2010, but this is just the beginning – wait ’til you hear what I did the rest of the month.

Disclosure: And since the FTC requires a disclosure and I want you to know too – yes, I have a working relationship with most of the brands mentioned in this post, I was paid to attend some of the events and I did receive products from some of the brands mentioned here. I am employed by Collective Bias, and I am part of Hanes Comfort Crew social media program.

August 3, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Vegas Kids Speaking Engagement

I spoke at the Vegas Kids trade show during the design, home & gift industries trade shows at Las Vegas Market. My topic focused on how businesses in the children’s furniture industry can gain competitive advantage by using social media. It was also thrilling walking around the show, and for a moment I missed those days I was a retailer and a buyer and the world of making the choices were in my hands. I also enjoyed seeing new designers and artists like Marie Christophe.

While in Vegas, I stayed at The Palazzo, which I have now declared my favorite hotel (so far) in Las Vegas. The highlights of the trip were having dinner with my husband’s aunt and then spending an afternoon with my blogger friend who can be found behind all these amazing blogs: Cupy Cakey, The Deal Fanatic and Lenz Love.

August 5, New York City, New York.

Today Show, Kodak Bus Tour, Hanes Event, Colgate HQ Visit, Nikon Party

BlogHer conference invaded the city, and Today Show blasted the message from bloggers to the entire nation. Liz of Cool Mom Picks and Ree, the famous Pioneer Woman were the guests, and in addition about 25 other bloggers were invited to the set, including me. I was happy to celebrate blogging and to see so many friends, like Colleen of Classy Mommy, Melissa the Consumer Queen, Monica of Mommy Brain Reports, Mommy Niri, Christine of Boston Mamas, Audrey of Mom Generations and Elizabeth the Party Planning Professor. I was honored to meet Ree Drummond, she lives life to the fullest, and has made her happiness a way for her to make a living as well. She is one of the most inspiring women online, if not The Most Inspiring.

The busy day continued with a Kodak Bus Tour – two double-decker buses full of bloggers snapping photos with spanking new Kodak EasyShare M580 Digital Cameras we all got. Good times! From the Kodak bus tour I toured a few friends cross the city to get to the Hanes party, where we got organizing tips from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s Michael Malone.

You may find it hard to believe but the day that had started before 6 wasn’t even close to over yet – next in the agenda was Colgate Headquarters visit, where our Collective Bias bloggers learned about the Invisible Nasties and the importance of getting a new toothbrush every three months.

From there I went to Nikon party at Bryant Park Grille, and was happy to spend some time with Chic Erika. The night was far from over – I saw my Collective Bias colleagues and community members afterwards, and do wish the photos of me dancing hadn’t leaked out to the Facebook pages. But I have come to a conclusion that if someone sees me dancing and having a good time, it’s OK. After all, living life to the fullest is what I do.

During BlogHer 2010, Today Show invited two of my favorite bloggers to be as guests on the show, Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman and Liz Gumbinner of Cool Mom Picks. In addition – they invited about 20 other bloggers to tag along, visit the Plaza, and be on the set during the blogger interview broadcasting.

Two days before the show, we all got an email that welcomed us to bring our signs with us – you know, the Plaza is full of people waving their signs for the entire nation to notice on TV. Blogging to me has never been about me and getting my face and me on TV – however, it has always been about building Skimbaco and making it a brand people will recognize. Naturally, I could not resist bringing my Skimbaco sign on the set. While I understand it was sort of silly, and maybe more professional behavior was expected, I still wonder why nobody else brought theirs. If I have an opportunity to get my logo in the front of millions again, thank you very much, I will take it, and I recommend you taking it too.

While I did feel a little silly with my sign, I am proud of myself that I had guts to bring it and hold it up high. After all it was the only blogger sign on the Today Show and on TV that morning, and I did see it as a traffic jump on the same day. I want to inspire others to be proud of what they have built too, it’s about time to stop apologizing and to start holding our heads up high. Now, no, I don’t bring my sign everywhere, and I rarely advertise in any way, but frankly, there is a difference being humble and just plain stupid for not promoting yourself, and while I would like to see myself as more humble, I think I mainly fall in the category of plain stupid. Well, no more, I’m ready to take a less subtle approach for now on, because now Skimbaco is much more than me. Skimbaco has a team of amazing writers now, we are getting ready to kick off an amazing fall, I have contracts with two TV networks, and this is not a small little thing I do on my spare time, and it’s about my time to start treating it accordingly. Next time I am asked to bring my sign on TV, I will do it again. Maybe even a bigger one.

Yes, Ree is as amazing in person as in her blog. We all got Ree’s book The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl as a gift, and if you already don’t have it, I really recommend it. Ree’s photos are amazing, and her recipes straight forward and delicious.

Jenny from Kodak, one of those who just gets it.

Last week I spent four days in New York City to spend time with my extended online family, my blogger friends. BlogHer to me isn’t about sessions, and learning from the speakers – I have been in enough many conferences to learn that the face-to-face time and round table discussions with people are much more valuable (to me) than the information learned in the sessions. The sessions can be great, usually are, but I have been just very lucky to get to know some of the most brilliant women and men in the blogging and social media industry, and listening to them in a smaller setting to me is more valuable.

Esther of ShePosts was covering the best events.

There is much to say about sponsorships, swag and people who love the swag, and even question that if blogging conferences really are about connecting, engaging and learning, why we need corporate brands involved (for starters; to make it affordable for us). I am thankful for all of the sponsors of BlogHer conference, and all of those companies who hosted events during the conference. The fun events and more intimate settings offered perfect opportunities to connect with fellow bloggers, and the sponsored booths and suites offered a great opportunity for brands to get to know who we bloggers really are. Most importantly, the sponsors made BlogHer possible and affordable for us.

Our blogger community is very diverse; we have bloggers who despise the corporate involvement, and we have those who don’t care what they have to do to get the brands to notice them. I’m just trying to find a happy solution how we can all work together in peace, in a way that everyone benefits, and most importantly, you, my dear reader, benefit from it.

The talk about companies who are “using” bloggers is sort of funny; there is not such thing really – dear blogger friend, all you have to say is “no” if you think you are asked to do things that you are not comfortable with. Really, nobody can rape your blog but yourself.

What I think is even funnier are the bloggers who are going only for themselves, and what they can get out of this trendy brand-blogger relationship that we are all trying to figure out. I think what many bloggers forget about in this brand-blogger talk is YOU. You, who read our blogs, and how the relationships with brands can actually benefit you. Granted many bloggers posses the egos of size of 747s and their blogs mainly are about them, and how wonderful they are, and it’s understandable they also only think what they can get out of this. But most bloggers like to know that what they write actually means something to you, and matters to you. And it benefits you somehow – or inspires or entertains.

This is when being “in the know” with the companies who make products we buy is sort of cool. You will get to hear about products that you need and want from bloggers you like, and the bloggers get your comments in our blogs directly to companies. Many bloggers actually care enough to get the feedback that we hear in our blogs and our Twitter streams back to the companies. And many companies actually care enough to listen what we all collectively have to say, and the brave ones even make changes to their products, the way they are packaged, and the way they are sold based on this feedback.

Now this is the part why I think brand-blogger relationship is so amazing – we really have a collective voice and someone is listening, and we together can influence what kind of products are in the market, or how they are sold. I don’t see the brand-blogger relationship only as a way to market products to you in a way that makes sense to you (you wouldn’t be reading let’s say fashion blogs, if you didn’t want to know about the latest fashion clothing). I see it as part of the future how we all can influence not just how brands market their products but that they make products we want.

Today Show gets it. At the Plaza with Melissa and Monica

I salute those companies who have interest in hearing our opinions, and engaging with us and making a difference together with us. I thank those companies who sponsor events like BlogHer, Type-A-Mom Conference, EVO Conference and Bloggy Boot Camps. They are taking part and supporting what we do, and ultimately saying this is important. The relationship between you and I is important. I think it has a very deep reflection on our society right now, that the relationship between citizen journalists and their readers have become so important.

Now – at the same time, there are sponsoring companies who go back to their headquarters to scratch their heads why did we get involved with this humongous group of women, and probably are as overwhelmed as the first time bloggers who attended BlogHer. They are asking for ROI, and trying to figure out if they got bang for their buck, and emailing now all of the bloggers they met what they should write about their products. These companies are like the bloggers who are going only for themselves, and I think whatever you do in social media, if your only goal is to make things better for yourself, you will fail. Social media is about community, about people, not about products, not about promotion and marketing.

Most brands and bloggers I spoke with went back home from BlogHer energized, bag full of new ideas, and ready to change the world, together. I’m sure some of them got it from inspiring sessions, but I got my inspiration from connecting with brilliant people.

My favorite boss John Andrews of Collective Bias and I.

Full disclosure: My company Collective Bias paid my hotel during BlogHer and I was in the city for my job. No company sponsored my BlogHer attendance.
