Lifetime Television will premiere a new reality series, Coming Home, featuring U.S. soldiers’ surprise family reunions across the country after serving long tours of duty, on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at 10 PM (ET/PT). Coming Home will air right before the fifth season premiere of Lifetime’s hit drama Army Wives. This post is inspired by the show. The backstory in short… My husband Matt is not active duty anymore, but was an army helicopter test pilot for the first 6 years of our marriage. We were stationed in Germany when Matt got deployed to Kosovo. It was 2000, and during that time our first daughter was born.

I came back to Germany to our home about one month before Matt was coming home from Kosovo. Isabella was three months old when we moved from Finland to Germany, and I was so excited to be back. It was springtime, and the weather was nicer in Central Europe than what it had been in Finland, my baby was healthy, happy and growing well, and I was ready to go back home. And more importantly, I was ready to see my husband again, and start our life together as a family. It had been lots of nightless nights with a newborn and worrying about Matt being in Kosovo, but once we got back to Germany I felt much closer to Matt.

I remember the weeks before the Homecoming Day being full of happiness, and excitement. I counted days and hours for Matt’s arrival, and I wanted everything at home to be perfect. I sewed Isabella a dress that said “I (heart) Dad” in the front for the Homecoming Day. I embroidered the little heart in it. I think Matt probably thought it was the dorkiest little dress ever, but I didn’t care. I needed to keep my days busy, so I also knitted little sweaters and made scrapbooks and the house was so clean that you could eat from the floors. I was like an Energizer Bunny charged with Homecoming Happiness. I was nesting probably more than I had before the baby was born.

Then it was the Homecoming Day.

Matt’s unit was flying their helicopters in in a formation, and their arrival was set for noon. I changed my clothes probably like five times that morning. Even though I had planned my outfit already a week ago. And you know what happens when you are trying to leave a house with a four month old – yeah, it happened, right when we were leaving, and I had to stay for another diaper change.

And I totally missed seeing Matt to land his helicopter.
On a Homecoming Day.
After he had been in Kosovo for six months.

We arrived to the air field after the rotors had stopped spinning, and after every one else had said their teary eyed hellos. I’m sure Matt was disappointed, but he didn’t say anything. Heck, he was two hours late on our first date, so a few minutes on Homecoming Day was nothing. It actually felt like a first date, in a very weird way (in a good weird way). No tears, just the strongest squeeze-hugs ever. I couldn’t believe he was home, and he was all mine. And now we were a family.

He couldn’t believe how much babies grow in just a matter of few months. I had sent him photos of Isabella, but he said he wouldn’t have even recognized her. A baby who had been under weight at birth was now this butterball with rolling sausage hands. I think it was all very overwhelming to him.

I don’t even remember if there was any kind of formal program, if anyone said welcome home. We had some banners made and hung up on the fences all over the post, and I think mine said “Minä rakastan sinua”, I love you in Finnish. I knew he would know what it meant, but others wouldn’t. I think all of this Homecoming stuff was kind of bothering him, and he just wanted to go home. So did I.

We snapped one last photo to remember the day, and it was with three of Matt’s best buddies and their wives. They were the “Four Horsemen”, who battled through the flight school together, graduated and all were sent to Germany for their first assignment as pilots, and then to Kosovo. Their wives had become my best friends during our first year in Germany.

The Four Horsemen were back in town, and life was good.

More about Lifetime’s new TV show:

Coming Home will follow surprise reunions of soldiers from all five branches of the military with their spouses, children, parents and other loved ones as they return home from active duty throughout the world. With hundreds of thousands of members of the armed forces serving the country in the Middle East and elsewhere across the globe, military family reunions have become a sensation online, where millions of people have been inspired watching touching footage of loved ones and friends re-connecting with one another after enduring long periods of time apart. Coming Home is produced by RelativityREAL, LLC with Tom Forman (creator of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) and Star Price (The Amazing Race) serving as executive producers.

I had an opportunity to interview Heidi Klum a few weeks ago and you can read my interview below.

Heidi Klum’s new TV show called Seriously Funny kids airs on Lifetime TV on Monday evenings, and it is life unscripted with kids and Heidi is tasked to get kids to “seriously funny”, and this mother of four says with kids, life is never not funny. Heidi has a great sense of humor, and she sounded like a mom who has rules for her kids (every day outdoor play, craft time and not too much TV for example) but who knows how to have fun with the kids and be a involved parent, even in Beverly Hills, where her children go to private school, and have craft time with a tutor-like craft instructor. You can read more about the show and watch full episodes at MyLifetime.com.

Interview with Heidi Klum

What Heidi said about working with kids…

There is a saying in Hollywood that you should never work with children or animals, and now you chose to work with children. Is it difficult?

Heidi Klum: I have to say it’s true. It is very very hard. I have to say that into going into this I thought it was going to much easier. Mainly because I have four kids of my own. I thougt I was ready, but they are my children, and they know me and they know the tones of my voices etc. and these children don’t know my “voice” and I can’t teach them manners, they are not my kids. And it takes me a while to figure out who they are and what’s their story. And I want to know them before the show so we know what’s going on.

I interview 12-13 children a day, sometimes I can talk with a kid for an hour an half and nothing funny happens. Sometimes when we pre-interview them and, you know, we do a little chat with them, they’re really fun and outgoing and they really can’t stop talking. And then all of a sudden, they’re on my set with the lights and they totally clam up and they don’t say anything. With kids you have to be open minded and you need to go with the flow.

So you never really know what you’re going to get, but it’s kind of the challenge because you go in there. They’re not actors, I’m not an actress, I’m not a comedian.; I’m a mom, and, yes, I have done a little bit of television, but I’m not a professional. So I chat with them as a grownup and I ask them questions that might interest children, but also grownups because really it is a show for grownups.

How does your show differ from the Kids Say the Darnest Things with Bill Cosby?

Heidi Klum: We have same producers, and Bill Cosby is an actor, and a professional host and a TV person. I came intot this via Project Runway, and this is not what I do for living. There is an audience, people are clapping, it’s something new and different, and I’m new to it. Also the children have changed so much in the past 10-15 years ago, and they speak differently today than back then. Kids are still innocent, but they do speak differently. They talk back more. Thinking back when I was a kid, I was a quiet as a mouse, I wouldn’t have talked abck like the kids do today. If I would have been on television I wouldn’t have talked back the way some kids talk back to me. Kids were so well behaved and proper, and it has defenately changed. They are good and well behaved kids now too.

More what Heidi said about children…

What else are you learning about how kids see the world these days?

Heidi Klum: Kids are honest. They’ll talk about their parents. They say they’re on their ‘machines’ as they call them. Like their blackberry or their phone or their computer. Being a parent, myself, it’s hard to kind of do it all. You are so expected now to have an e-mail and return it within the day, or within the next 20 minutes. Sometimes I get a call of ‘I e-mailed you 20 minutes ago, why haven’t you replied?’ and I’m like, maybe because I’m sitting down with my kids, or I was driving them to school in the morning. The kids, they’re like, ‘why are you always looking into that computer?’ or ‘why are you not talking to me?’ So I hear those complaints a lot.

You just talk to the kids, and they will answer you. Sometimes they’ll lie, but those lies are quite funny. Or they’ll lie about silly things. About how they saw the tooth fairy, or that when they were in a plane they saw angels in the clouds. But all in all, they’re innocent and not polluted with all the madness that are in the adult world.

Parenting advice from Heidi..

One piece of advice for parents? How to be a better parent?
Heidi Klum: Before you have children and family you have to know that your life is changing and your life is goung to change and that you are going to step back and you have to understand before going into. When you have children my advice is try to see it from the kids’ side. Soemtimes you have a busy day and you come home and you feel like saying “not now” but you have to undertand from their point of way and stop working and focus on your children. And just get used to the fact that sometimes as a parent you just get puked on.

What Heidi said about her own family…

Tell us about your own children and what kind of family time or traditions you have.

Heidi Klum: I try to understand where kids are coming from and I try to use humor and we have fun together as a family. I like to be the mom who says yeah, come to our house. They do fashion shows at our house all the time.

I love fun work books, we watch a lot of movies on plane, and we do arts and crafts. Kids go to out a lot and they have to go outside every day. I like that they are active and I don’t want them to sit on the computer and work. They just go to karate, sometimes the boys want to do ballet, we have an art teacher who brings us a lot of craft ideas and they always do wonderful projects. We make giagantic welcome signs when daddy or I go out of the town, and we try to make a memory of everything.

Heidi talks about the most embarrassing things in her childhood

Are things different for your children than what your childhood was like?

Heidi Klum: Yes, it’s very different. My daughter wears uniforms to school and we had a long discussion about the uniforms, I never wore an uniform to school when I was growing up. We didn’t have much money when I was growing up, and everyone else was wearing Lacoste, but we couldn’t afford it. One time my parents went on vacation to Thailand, and bought a bag of Lacoste crocodiles and my mom sewed them on my T-shirts and sweaters so I could feel like I fit in.

Did you ever do anything seriously funny or embarrassing as a child?

Heidi Klum: The funniest things was probably snail races, we had a lot of snails, and we did snail races. We didn’t have as much toys as our kids have today. We were always outside. While I never stuck anything up in my nose, I would pee in my pants a lot. That was always very embarrassing. I never loved going to the bathroom at school so I would hold it in all day – which is the worst thing to do. Then my Mom couldn’t get to the door in time and I would be ringing the door bell and pee in my pants.

What Heidi said about Seal and romance

How do you keep the romance up in your marriage?

Heidi Klum: Key number one – you have to marry someone who you really think is hot and sexy. I still look at Seal, and I think he is hot and sexy and I get the butterflies. You have to work to keep yourself hot and sexy too. Sure I workout and keep my body fit for my job, but also for my husband. You should keep yourself healthy, and I want to look good for my husband. For my work too, but I want to do it for my husband.

How do make time for your marriage?

Heidi Klum: You just have to make time for it. It’s same with spring cleaning or eating right – you have to just do it. We have four kids and love our kids, but we just have to do it – get time just for us. You have to talk about grown up things, you can’t always talk about children. I know everyone can’t have nanny but grandparents are so important – they teach children so much, but it’s great to go out with your husband and have grandparents to take care of the kids.

But is Heidi teaching her children to live life to the fullest?

You are a career woman and a super mom and truly live life to the fullest on every aspect, how are you teaching your children to live life to the fullest too?

Heidi Klum: No, I don’t because I don’t think my kids should worry about making money and jobs or anything like that. I want them to be kids.

So you think you need money to live life to the fullest and be happy?

Heidi Klum: Yes. I like to travel around the world, and that to me is living life to the fullest. I love going to India, and seeing new cultures, and I guess you could travel without much money too, but I couldn’t.

Lifetime’s original mini series Marry Me airs on December 12th followed by a second part on Monday December 13th. I had an opportunity to show the movie for the Park City Mountain Resort Snowmamas in our Snowmamas Summit in Park City last weekend. I truly recommend having a Ladies Night Out – and by out I mean out in the snow!- and Ladies Movie Night In for your next fun get together with your girlfriends.

Park City Mountain Resort Snowmamas is a group of moms who share their ski vacation and ski sports tips with other parents, and this is my second year as a Snowmama. Friday had been a long travel day for everyone, and while Salt Lake City is a very convenient airport to get to from almost anywhere in the US, missed flights, confused airport shuttles and long flights had all of us ready for some fun and to get to know each others a little bit better – our group grew this year. We started our fun by heading to Gorgoza Park and get our winter fun on by snow tubing. There is nothing better than letting it go and trying something fun like crazy fast snow tubing – coming down the hill in a speed of light (ok, maybe not that fast, but hey it was very fast..) and screaming your lungs out.

After the snow tubing we all pretty much changed to our jammies in the ski lodge and crashed on the oversized couch to watch the Marry Me movie. While I adore the Marry Me movie viewing party ideas created by Dawn & Elizabeth of Partybluprints, we were all so beat from the day’s traveling and the snow tubing, that we were just happy to have a few snacks and chillax in the front of the TV. My special thanks goes for Eileen of Taking the Kids who pretty much was The Mama of the Snowmamas and helped to set up everything, and of course thanks for Krista of Park City Mountain Resort for hosting the entire weekend for us.

One of my favorite actresses, Lucy Liu, plays the main role in the Marry Me-movie and it was fun to see her in her first romantic comedy. In the movie Lucu Liu’s character, Rae is desperate to marry and settle down, but it doesn’t really help that her long time boyfriend dumps her. Suddenly Rae has two other men in her life – and the boyfriend comes back knocking her door and she takes you for this fun journey following her and which one of these three men she will choose. The movie is a lot of fun, and especially the second part of it.

Disclosure: I have a working relationship with both Lifetime & Park City Mountain Resort. All my opinions are always mine.

I had a chance to chat with actress Chyler Leigh of Grey’s Anatomy this week. Chyler stars as “Queenie Alton” in the Lifetime Original Movie The 19th Wife. Chyrel Leigh told she was asked to star in the movie, and it was a big decision for her to leave her family for a month to film the movie in Canada. She was very laid back during our chat, and you could tell she loves talking about her family and her children, and her priorities are straight. Read what she said about the movie, polygamy and get the scoop on the season 7 Grey’s Anatomy too!

The movie The 19th Wife is set in Utah in a polygamist community and based on David Ebershoff’s New York Times best-selling novel of secret world of polygamy. The movie is an interesting peak into polygamy, and also so much more. In fact it is more of a murder mystery and a story of a woman finding herself and having the strength to fight for what she believes in. You can read more about the movie at MyLifetime.com and watch it on Monday. The 19th Wife premieres on Monday, September 13, 2010, at 9:00 pm (ET/PT) on Lifetime Television. The season 7 of Grey’s Anatomy premieres on September 23, 2010, at 9/8c on ABC.

What Chyler Leigh said about The 19th Wife

What did you first think when you heard about the movie?
Chyler Leigh: The character – she is incredibly strong woman who has her strong faith and values, and I found a lot of similarities to me, especially when it comes to her child – I like to protect my children too. The movie was so different what I had ever done before, it was great to step into it.

What’s so interesting in polygamy?
Chyler Leigh: It’s interesting to see how far people carry it out; their faith. It’s really interesting and a sad in a way just how they are supposed to stay mellow and keep producing. It’s incredible compelling – the strengh of these women.

How did you prepare for the role?
Chyler Leigh: It was exciting, and different what I had done before. It was an interesting parallel with my chartecter and me learning more about polygamy at the same time. It was very interesting to me, and upsetting too to hear about these stories. I did’t know a lot about it before going into that, and had to reach it, and I read the book during our filming.

What do you hope that are some of the takeaways that people get from The 19th Wife-movie?
Chyler Leigh: Everyone takes something different. No matter what you were told to believe in, it always is a matter of following your heart. I hope the movie tells, whatever you are passionate about, don’t be afraid to listen to your heart.

What was the most fun part to play Queenie in The 19th Wife?
Chyler Leigh: It was all so fantastic, the people were great to work with, including the crew and the actors. It was unique to be in this movie. My family stayed in L.A. and it was very unique because it was the first time I was able to 100% focus on the project.

What was it like to wear the costumes? And how was it with that long hair?
Chyler Leigh: The weather changed so fast, and the first week it was raining, it was nice to stay warm with the dress. But it was challenging on the hot days. The dress helped to step into the character. I had 24” hair extensions, and the hair and makeup took a lot of tim, and the hair was quite heavy and I can’t even tell how much hairspray we used for it. Not very eco-friendly.

What Chyler Leigh said about her life

Speaking of eco-friendly, what do you do to be more eco-friendly in your life?
Chyler Leigh: My son is very eco-conscious, telling us that we don’t want to look like in the movie Wall-E, he is very aware and conscious of earth. We live close to beach in Orange County and try to go to the beach on the beach clean-up days. When my husband or I need to go to L.A. we carpool often.

How do you live life to the fullest and what are you passionate about?
Chyler Leigh: I feel we are obligated to do good. I’m passionate about helping – I Iove Generosity Water organization, I’ve now started working with them, they want to end the water crisis in Africa, create wells, and create rain harvesting systems for towns. I’m also involved with The A21 – campaign against human trafficking and promoting women’s well being. Human trafficking – it’s sickening and I love children and want to help. And I feel obligated to help, like we all should.

What is your secret to successful marriage?
Chyler Leigh: Time! We don’t have much in quantity, so we focus on quality time – just to get out of the house, even if it is just to look at each others. We take a lot of time to build our marriage, we are a team, and we both come from situations like divorce, and you want to make these changes to become a better person. We work really hard to make our family our priority.

What Chyler Leigh said about Grey’s Anatomy and season 7

So Grey’s Anatomy had a horrible incident last season. How is it to deal with that drama in this season?
Chyler Leigh: Drama manifests differently in every character, my characters has a complete breakdown, and has to go to psych ward, and she can’t sleep, she can’t shut off her brain and can’t sleep. She feels guilty. Everyone handles it differently in the show. Everyone will have to start doing one-on-one sessions. Everyne will start seeing my character differently, and everyone will start tiptoeing around her.

How do you think your Grey’s Anatomy fans think of you after seeing you as Queenie in The 19th Wife?
Chyler Leigh: I hope they see that I’m not a one note person.

Do you trade any parenting advice with the other Grey’s Anatomy cast members like Ellen Pompeo?
Chyler Leigh: Yes, we have like 20 kids among all of us, and we definitely talk about it, in fact it is quite a hot topic on the set.

Do you have any favorite TV shows?
Chyler Leigh: Yes, Top Chef!

My fourth year of blogging here will start soon, and ever since I started, I have been writing about design, style, fashion, travel and little bit of everything and not really defining my niche. I have been thinking of a clean start several times, and I even started Skimbaco Home as a more specific niche blog. I will be making a few changes here at Skimbaco Lifestyle in the upcoming months, but I am not looking for a clean start – I am going more and more back to basics – featuring things I love; design, style, fashion, travel, skiing and everything about being a woman, a mother, a career gal and a wife.

One thing has always remained the same for me, I have wanted to inspire and feature amazing women. I want to celebrate everything women, and I think that is one of the reasons the Lifetime TV Network and I get along so well. I have loved my job as the Lifetime Moms home channel editor.

Someone once asked me how I define success in my blog and asked my readership numbers. Funny thing is, that I don’t really care about numbers. I feel that I am a success if I can inspire or make one woman feel good about herself with my posts.

I want to help you to live life to the fullest, and inspire you – whether it is creating your home your sanctuary, or looking at your best with latest fashions, or enjoying your day whether it is skiing in Colorado or shopping in New York.

I got so excited when Lifetime asked me to participate to their yearly Clean Start challenge as a mentor to one of the challengers.

Lifetime’s Clean Start is a three-month long challenge, where four women are making a Clean Start in their lives, and competing for $10,000. You can follow their journey through videos and behind-the-scenes details in the myLifetime.com Clean Start Community.

I will be helping out Carolyn Braska from New Jersey. Carolyn is an Army wife who is trying to balance the demands of keeping her house in order and being a wife and a mom of three. She used to work full time, but now she is a stay-at-home mom with a newborn and a wife to a soldier, and her life has changed! Being a stay-at-home-mom isn’t as easy as people think, and being an Army wife especially isn’t as easy as people think. I am excited to learn more about Carolyn, and to share my experiences of the past ten years, and help her to live life to the fullest.

I would love you to join me at cheering Carolyn to win the Lifetime’s Clean Start Challenge presented by Glade. By voting (vote Carolyn!) you could also win $1,000 and you can even participate and vote daily!

My kids started school this week, and we had some disagreements of clothing yesterday morning.

That, and listening to the 9/11 remembering on radio on the way back home from school really made me down yesterday morning. Then FedEx guy rang my doorbell and dropped of a review copy of Lifetime TV Network’s original movie Georgia O’Keeffe, a biography of artist Georgia O’Keefe, on my doorstep.

And while I can not say that the movie changed my life, but it changed my life for that moment, for yesterday morning.

Georgia O’Keeffe inspires and while her lifestyle isn’t for every modern woman, and not for me, I applaud her strength. Her husband understood that she was a “woman proud of her feelings, her body and her sex… model of female essence never been seen before”, yet he treated her really bad, O’Keeffe had so much strength that she left her husband in New York, and created a whole new life for her in New Mexico.

Georgia O’Keeffe was an amazing artist, and her art and her way of living was ahead of her time. She still inspires women today to be in charge of their own lives and do what they love and live life with passion.

I would love you to watch the Lifetime original movie Georgia O’Keeffe on Saturday, Sept 19 at 9 PM ET/PT and share what you thought about the movie. I will be sharing how Georgia and her art inspired me here in my blog and at LifetimeMoms.com

Oops. Sorry to yell at you and right on the title! But I have been waiting to tell this exciting news to you for a while.

I am the Home Channel leader and writing about home decorating and everything home related at Lifetime Moms. One of my weekly features is Army Wives Home Deco. A few months ago I was thinking how all of it fit so perfectly together… Army Wives is one of the Lifetime TV Network’s most popular TV shows, and what is the thing that unites real army wives? They move every 3 years or so! Army Wives get to decorate a lot of homes, and in fact that how I personally got “trained” in interior design – by being an army wife!

So every Sunday, watch Army Wives on TV and then click over at LifetimeMoms.com on Monday mornings to get home deco ideas Army Wifes style! No, not just for real army wives, but for anyone who wants inexpensive and easy decorating ideas – and for people who live in apartments or move often, just like army wives. Army Wives Home Deco is only a small part what I will be writing about, but it is one of the most exciting ones for me. I love supporting our troops and was an army wife for years.

Get ready to mark your calendars! There is viel Spaß ahead with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, when the Project Runway starts on August 20th. This year it’ll be on the Lifetime TV Network. I am so excited about the new season, I missed most of the last season due the moving and everything else going on.

Lifetime is taking Project Runway to all new sphere, and you can get so much info about the show and get to know the 16 designer already now. They already have 80 video clips of the competing fashion designers at the MyLifetime.com. The designers’ house AND closet tours (fun!), audition tapes and fashion tips directly from the designers. You can also find designer portfolios, photos and their look books of past designs.

I spent way too long on the site just watching the video clips, clipping through the portfolios…

Ra’mon Lawrence’s closet tour was fun, those shoes dude… oh those shoes! I love that Rodney Epperson is a dad, and his designs look amazing.. Shirin Askari – I love you already: I agree, Crocs are a fashion don’t, and a little black dress is a must have.

Also, Carol Hannah Whitfield agrees with this, I love her fashion tips as well – and I have to say that I like her a lot, she is 23-year-old, who is self-taught (or mom-taught!) designer from Charleston, she is fun, funky and feminine, and I think her style is something that fits most girly girls. Some of the other designers are talented and creative yes, but a little over the top for me, so I like Carol Hannah’s style sense, how she is making simple, elegant but fun clothing, that has that “it” factor. I can’t wait to see more of her and if she is winner material with her some what simple (yet very elegant) designs.
