Guest post by Andrea Peskind Katz, Great Thoughts
I’ve always been a big reader. My family laughed at me when I was young because I read my Nancy Drew’s so many times that I memorized them. My passion for reading has never waned. Throughout college and grad school, I still found time to read great novels.
Reading is like oxygen for me- it’s how I breathe and how I soothe. I can live without most TV shows but I can’t live without my Kindle! Even when I had preemie twins in the neo natal intensive care unit, I still read before I tried to sleep.
I truly believe we all need reading as an escape. Real life can be tough and a good novel gives you a way to run away without much effort. I also love finding other big readers. Women who read a lot tend to be very bright and very funny- two qualities I love in a friend.
I am somewhat of a reading proselytizer (yes, I know that isn’t a real word.) If I love a book, I immediately start telling my best friends about it and then buying it for the next birthday gift.
3 Books That Made Me Happier
Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman – a beautiful book with the best dialogue I’ve read in forever. CeeCee’s mother dies and she goes to live with her aunt and her aunt’s fabulous housekeeper, Oletta. You just want to have a mint julep with these characters! Read my full review of the book Saving CeeCee Honeycutt.
The Dressmaker of Khair Khana Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon- This unbelievable TRUE story of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule who have to find a way to support their families. They become successful entrepreneurs despite all odds. You cannot finish this book without a smile on your face.
Some of my favorite quotes about reading
“If you can read, you don’t ever have to be lonely.” —Maggie Osborne
“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” —C.S. Lewis
“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.” —Jane Austen
Go forth and read, my friends. If you need a good book recommendation, check out my site, www.greatthoughts.com and if you just read a great book, connect with me on Twitter @Gr8thoughts and share it with me!
