Barcelona: A City of Architectural Marvel

Architecture of Barcelona

Experiencing a new city is always exhilarating, especially for many of us here at Skimbaco who have a passion for traveling. My recent excursion to Barcelona was not exception. I have traveled to many parts of Europe, but this was my first time visiting Spain and Barcelona. We all have opinions and expectations regarding certain cities in the world, expectations that are either validated or voided upon a visit to the city. Paris: a city of lights, fashion, culture, food. New York: vibrant, big, fashion, fast-paced. Los Angeles: sunny, relaxed, smoggy, warm. These are just some adjectives that come to mind for some major cities. What were my adjectives before arriving in Barcelona? I actually was not sure what to expect from the Mediterranean city, and left my own exploring and indulgence determine that for me. Reflecting on my photos from my travels, I have concluded that Barcelona is most notably and architectural marvel. While out walking around, I constantly noticed myself glancing up towards the buildings in astonishment.

Gothic District Barcelona

The gothic district, one of the oldest parts of the city, is quintessentially European: narrow streets, cobble stones, and gas lanterns. I loved walking around, getting lost in the tiny, haphazard streets. That is the best way to experience a city. The building in the gothic district all had beautiful balconies, intricate archways, and beautiful doors. In addition to the gothic district, Barcelona is renowned for the architecture around town contributed by the famous architect Atoni Gaudi. His work is highly distinguishable and mostly concentrated in the Catalan capital.

Some of his most notable buildings are the Casa Batllo, Casa Mila, and the Sagrada Familia. The Sagrada Familia is still under construction today. Hours can be spent looking at the intricacy of the designs which often blend nature and religion. The city of Barcelona is a great place to indulge in the Mediterranean lifestyle as it blends art and architecture with the vibrant blue sea.
